Modularity
![](recent-projects/Modularity.gif)
The modularity project was a fast track military housing job. The modules were built in two separate facilities in order to get them completed in time to meet the project deadline. We had to fly to Boise Idaho and Salem Oregon to check the progress of the modules, and the quality control of the buildings.
When the modules arrived, they were put together on site and then our work began. The modules needed power, fire alarm, mass notification and telephone service. All the interconnections of the modules were done by Star Electric. All the mechanical systems were installed after the modules arrived and we were responsible for those also.
Every row of modules had a separate fire alarm panel, and all of the communication was in a duct bank system. The main fire alarm panel was in a building separate from all other structures. The start date was May 1st 2006 and the completion was August 15th 2006. The project was completed on time.
MOUT

The MOUT job stands for Military Operation Urban Training. The MOUT project was an interesting job. It was a design build project of a mock town for the US Army. The town consisted of 17 buildings in various stages of disrepair, some were complete, and some looked as if they had been bombed or blown up.
This job had over a mile of communication and primary power concrete encased duct bank. Every building communicated with a tall 4 story AAR or After Action Review Building. All the lights and receptacles inside each of the remote buildings could be controlled from the AAR% building, via a computer. There is also an outdoor sound system, and camera system for reading all events.
Morris Thompson Cultural And Visitors Center
![](recent-projects/MorrisThompson.gif)
Morris Thompson Cultural and Visitors Center provides visitor information, trip planning services, a theater, an artisans' workshop and demonstration area, an Elder's gathering area and cultural and environmental education classroom and outdoor recreational space. This center was built to incorporate historical and traditional Alaskan architectural styles, connect downtown Fairbanks with pedestrian and bicycle walkways bordered by flowers and trees. They have a historic cabin built in 1910 located on the property. The building was built 140 feet from the Chena River to ensure adequate greenbelt along the river.
This job entailed a complete custom lighting electrical design for a visitor's center with spring, summer, fall and winter dioramas. The dioramas are accented with theater lighting, which is accented by a computer controlled, dimmer and relay panel. The dimmer panel has 96 channels and the relay rack consists of 30 circuits.
The lighting system is programmable and fully adjustable to synchronize with the audio and video. Along with the dioramas there is a smokehouse, winter cabin, kaleidoscope theatre and elders hall with custom lighting. Along with the lighting effects, there are audio and video equipment that require a multitude of cabling and extensive rough-in.

The Courthouse is a 5 story building located in downtown Fairbanks. It was designed by Charles Bettinsworth and Company; some of the challenges with the electrical portion of this project were multitude of different finishes (marble, oak and tile throughout. It was also the first multi story building that Star Electric Inc. had undertaken. The security system was complex, the courthouse was very time consuming and intricate. The courthouse was a very challenging project.
Virology Laboratory UAF
![](recent-projects/VirologyLab.gif)
The new facility provides an array of virological services that is perhaps among the best in the country. It is the only full service virology laboratory in the state. Alaska has the highest rate of animal rabies in the nation and hardly a week goes by without a necropsy procedure being performed. Performing these necropsies out of state could have fatal results to the infected person. This lab gives early diagnosis to a person in need.
This lab has a special room where all who enter must have FBI clearance. The fire department cannot even get into the room. Scientist study the levels of smallpox in this area. The new necropsy room has a ventilation system so scientists no longer have to tolerate the stench of a decomposing dogs head. A complex air handling system capable of filtering out bacteria and viruses, occupies the building's entire top floor. Automated molecular extractors rip apart viruses and isolate genetic material. A task that took 3 hours before now takes 45 minutes.
The virology Lab Project had 2 phases of the project. Phase 1 included preliminarily site work and utilidor construction. Phase 2 consisted of the Virology Lab building. The pre-construction activities were brief. Star Electric attended 1 pre-qualification meeting and then immediately started compiling our sub-contractor package.
After we were selected for Phase 1 work, we attended a pre-construction meeting at UAF and were in constant contact with the general contractor Project Manager and site superintendent. The laboratory was a complex project with a high level of coordination among all the contractors involved. Star Electric Inc. was an important part of the effort. The security and building access system alone was a monumental task. The job was completed on time and under budget with a minimum number of change orders.
